Social Problems

We ultimately only read the first half of the book. I felt the author did a great job explaining the content and provided excellent examples to help you understand things even more.

My only complaint is that the author can also sometimes get a little repetitive, but it's just to drive the point home. I definitely recommend that if your professor assigns any readings, do the readings. It may take time out of your day but it is here to help you. The book is the size of a typical novel, making transporting it and reading it much more efficient.

I also used the book in class and while working on assignments frequently to refer back to some ideas or concepts. I used this book to teach an intro course to social problems, along with other assigned readings, and this book was by far my favorite.

Sorry, we can't find that page.

It's a very clear description and clear organization. The structure and framework lend themselves well to a course that requires writing or exams. It's not like most of the social problems texts, and in this case, that's a great thing!

Social Problems as Topics of Concern: The Sabiectivist Outlook imagine two societies with arrangements that discriminate against women: in one, people consider these arrangements normal and natural; in the other, some people consider these arrangements wrong. In recent decades, most Americans have come to view social arrangements. Similarly, the views of individuals outside a society may differ from those of its members.

When Americans criticize sexism in other countries they are identifying a- social problem, even if most of the occu: pants of those countries disagree. Other social prob- lems fade away. Therefore, social problems should not be viewed as a type of social condition, but 10 Social Problems as a process of responding to social conditions.

Thus, we can define social problems as efforts to arouse concern about conditions within society. In other words, the study of social problems should focus not on conditions, but on claims about conditions.

We might try to measure the number of poor peo- ple, determine the causes of poverty, and so on. Of course, it is possible to study poverty and other social conditions, and there is nothing wrong with doing so.

But that has nothing to do with studying poverty as a social problem. Studying poverty as a social problem requires asking how and why people came to consider poverty problematic. Some societies with very large populations of poor people have not viewed poverty as a social problem. In contrast, in the United States and many other modern societies, the widespread view is that poverty should be considered a social problem, and that we ought to do something about it.

Studying poverty as a social problem requires studying how that view emerged and spread. Thinking systematically about social problems requires adopting a subjectivist approach that focuses on the pro- cess by which people identify social problems. That process involves what sociologists call social construction. People use language; language is essential to our understanding of the world that surrounds us just try thinking without using words.

One of the principal accomplishments of infancy and early childhood is learning to recognize, understand and use words. Through language, we learn to categorize the world: to understand that some things are edible food while others are dangerous and must not be eaten poison , and so on. The meanings of their words—their categories for classifying the world—are the ones that we learn. Because this is a social process, sociologists refer to it as social construction Berger Sr Luckmann, Sociologists do not view social construction as a completely arbitrary process; it is constrained by the physical world within which people find themselves.

We can imagine all sorts of ridicu- lous meanings that people might, in theory, construct. Iii general, the meanings people construct need to make sense of the world they inhabit. The point is not that people could assign ridiculous meanings to the world, but rather that they must assign some meanings to "ya—PW? Add to wishlist. Book Title. In fact, this last point brings to the forefront an important element about social problems: a social condition, whatever it may be, often does not become defined as a social problem until members of some powerful group perceive it as a problem affecting them in some way—perhaps as a threat to their well-being. Successfully overcoming any single social problem requires examining and changing many others.
